About Kandie

In the North Carolina Genearal Assembly  

Kandie Smith was elected to serve her first term in the North Carolina House of Representatives in November 2018 and was overwhelmingly re-elected to a second term in November 2020. In 2022, she was elected to the North Carolina Senate, where she currently serves the peopl of District 5. 

As part of her duties in the General Assembly, she serves as a member of the standing Senate Committees on:

  • Agriculture, Energy, and the Environment
  • Appropriations on Agriculture, Natural, and Economic Resources
  • Education/Higher Education
  • Transportation

Sen. Smith also serves in the NCGA as a member and leader of several caucuses, including: 

  • Senate Democratic Caucus Leadership, First-Term Senators Representative
  • Legislative Black Caucus, Vice-Chair
  • Bipartisan Joint Women's Caucus, Second Vice-Chair
  • Cannabis Caucus
  • Arts Caucus

Greenville Mayor

In 2017 Kandie made history when she became the first Black Female Mayor of the City of Greenville, NC.

During her tenure, she successfully lobbied both Raleigh and DC to secure more than 10 million dollars in grants and a zero percent interest loan to fund major infrastructure projects in the city. 

 

Greenville City Council

For more than 9 years, Kandie proudly served as the councilwoman representing District 1 in the City of Greenville.

During her time on the Council she made accountability and transparency a goal, something she has continued to prioritize in Raleigh. 

 

Civic Engagement

Kandie is a member of numerous civic organizations including the:

  • Treasurer, North Carolina Legislative Black Caucus
  • National Board of Black Realist
  • Democracy NC
  • When We All Vote

Kandie is also a very active member of the Greenville NC Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and is the Social Action Co-Chair.

 

Personal Life

Kandie obtained a Bachelor’s degree from Charleston Southern University where she majored in Sociology and minored in Communications. She is a small business owner of a training firm where she provides staff development and instruction for businesses throughout the United States with a focus on crisis management.
